Being a military spouse is challenging in itself. There are moves, making new friends, making a new house a home , and for many there is the sometimes frustrating task of finding a new career in a new city, a new state or even a new country.
While it may seem like alot this task doesn’t have to be so challenging if you take the necessary steps to prep yourself alittle bit.
1. Play Up Being A Military Spouse
Don’t take this as using your role as a military spouse for sympathy card. However being a military spouse opens you to many environments and situations that most people aren’t exposed too. We tend to make friends quick, we are put in areas (some remote ) and expected to function normally and for the most part we make the best of it. Use those social techniques when explaining why you would be a key player at your next job interview.
2. Get Social Head of Schedule
One of the biggest things you can do is be head of the game before you even arrive. This is where groups on social networking sites come in handy. Did you know there are groups for military spouses who are lawyers and teachers etc? Yes they exist and they are great ways to be in the know on how to get hired for these positions in specific areas.
3. Online Military Career Fairs
Every so often there are military resource and job sites such as VeteransRecruiting.com will hold virtual career fairs where spouses can log on and connect with potential employers.
4. Consider Your Entrepreneurial Dreams
If you have goals of one day owning your own business and the job hunt is not going so good , consider that now may be the time to pursue the passion. Use some of the resources and groups for military spouses who are entrepreneurs as your starting point.
5. Top Military Spouse Friendly Employers
Google that title and you will find a list of brands and companies that seem to hire not only Veterans but military spouses. These companies usually understand our challenges and seek to accommodate them. AT&T is an example of a military friendly employer.
