I’ve been there and know that feeling. However, after years of enduring Uncle Sam’s separation it became apparent that the key to getting through the 24 days leading up to Christmas was to create our own little deployment traditions the me and the kids could look forward to.
Some of the things we did:
Deployment Care Package
During holiday deployments I let the kids create their own care package and I did my own. Their’s consisted of some of the things they thought their dad would like, along with pictures or other little trinkets they created for him. Of course mine consisted of all the things I knew he liked, a couple of small presents, and some treats for his unit. We also sent a little mini tree with a small box of ornaments for him to place in his room or outside his room door.
Milspouse Ornament Exchange
One of the other things I did when stationed in Georgia was organize a ornament exchange with some friends. It was fun to find really personalized ornaments that would make others happy. I also participated in milspouse ornament exchanges online, and I looked forward to getting mail from others worldwide.
Hallmark Christmas Movies
This by far is one of my favorite things and one of the reasons I look forward to the holidays the most. Hallmark Christmas movies are my favorite! In a time when everyone is so busy, I look forward to slowing down and watching these happy, family friendly movies. I grab my warm blanket, some coffee or cocoa, some snacks and get to binge watching.
In fact this holiday season there are 40 new original movies premiering throughout the #CountdownToChristmas and the #MiracleOfChristmas.
One of the movies I am looking forward to watching premieres this Saturday (December 7th at 9pm/8c) and of course I am a little bias because it centers around the military.
In A Homecoming For The Holidays starring Laura Osnes and Stephen Huzar “Country singer Charlotte is home for the holidays and brother Ryan’s fellow ex-soldier Matt is in town. Writing her new album, Charlotte works with Matt to build a house for a friend in town.”
The movie also drives people to learn about Operation Homefront and all the awesome things they do for military.
