Before my husband was a soldier, he was a dad, and he has never forgotten that. The day he left for Basic Combat Training, he said goodbye to a one-year-old son and a pregnant wife, knowing that it would be a year until we’d all live together under the same roof.

Distance didn’t stop him from showing his love and being involved.

He regularly wrote letters and drew photos for our son, and wrote back and forth with me, helping to select the perfect name for our baby on the way. There were phone calls, video chats, and he never felt too far away.

When our second son arrived one month early, my husband was off for Advanced Individual Training. The moment he received a text sharing the news of our baby’s birth, he proudly showed off his newest son’s photo while in line for breakfast at the DFAC. Within three days, he was there, in the hospital room with me, lovingly holding our new baby.

We reconnected at our first duty station in Germany, finally as a family of four with a 5-month-old and a 2-year-old. Missing a whole year of one child’s life and nearly the entirety of the other’s, was quite a transition.

My husband made it his priority to come home from work and spend time getting to know the boys, no matter how tired he was from the work day.

Even now, as I write this, my husband is on the floor letting both boys, now ages 4 and nearly 6, climb all over him. The house is filled with laughter and our hearts are filled with love. No matter how hard he works or how far away he is, our children have no doubt of their places in his heart.
