While filming a video this weekend rapper Lil Wayne was accused of trampling our beloved United States flag. At first glance at the picture I admit I said what the hell is he doing? He has really lost it! As a blogger though I am used to people making assumptions based off a title or me misspeaking so I proceeded to watch the video in-depth.
I could be wrong but it appears to me (and many others whom I’ve talked too) that the the assistants on each side of the flag let go of it to reveal the group of people standing behind Lil Wayne. Lil Wayne appears to be in the moment performing for the video , unaware that he is stepping on the flag. Believe me I cringed but the common sense side of me that is able to see things from different angles says I have never been a celebrity or a performer and when you are in the moment like that, who knows what the hell you are aware of.
In his defense (although I am not a fan) Lil Wayne did take to Twitter to apologize and defend himself.

As of lately there have been quite a few encounters with our beloved US Flag. The latest news centered around a table display on the HGTV website where a flag table cloth was used, causing their FB page to be bombarded with attacks and brutal comments. The designer (a military brat herself) of the table display quickly apologized stating (I’m paraphrasing here) that she grew up in a military family and genuinely made a mistake.
Personally I think many people are uneducated and unaware of flag protocol. I even have to admit that I remember hubby deploying and I went to Michael’s and brought my first flag to hang outside. I was so proud that I hung it myself and that I was representing our country. I had no idea that I was supposed to take it down at sunset or leave it up with proper lighting and needless to say it got ruined.
Quite honestly after I took time to review the “Flag Code of Conduct” I realized that even the most patriotic have probably violated a few rules without even knowing it.

As military families we are constantly exposed to the importance of the flag because of what our men and women do and our connection to it, unfortunately many others are not. I don’t think it’s our job to attack them for it. Take time to educate others on the issue because everyone is as patriotic privy as we are.

I agree that this was probably more stupidity than malicious intent, but a lot of people failed here. Lil’ Wayne didn’t realize, his set designer, his videographer, everyone on set had the opportunity to see this glaring error and correct it.
I don’t think he was trying to be disrespectful. I think is was an epic fail to a what was suppose to be patriotic moment! I know, we bought our first flag when we lived in Hawaii and I was so proud of it! I am proud to be an American, Army wife, etc. So I never thought a thing when we hung it up but when it started to get ruined and we were PCSing I looked into the “Flag Codes” as well and decided then that no matter how patriotic we are and proud to be Americans I would not personally own another flag. We unintentionally broke so many codes! I felt really bad! So, from now on I will just admire my neighbors and let them brake the codes! lol Some of the codes are so simple to break on a daily basis especially on patriotic holidays like Memorial Day and July 4th!
I suppose I could choose to believe that he didn’t notice it, even though he looked down a lot while he was walking around. That however does not explain the entire group of people standing around like it was no big deal. I agree that many people are unaware of the codes, but shouldn’t someone there been in charge of making sure they know this stuff?? I’m sure if he is on stage in another country that someone is taking the time to make him aware of anything that may be offensive to the people there. I say someone should be fired.
I can honestly say I have never accidentally disrespected the US flag. I don’t know that he intentionally stepped on it the first time but he was aware once he looked down the first time.
