Some weeks ago I was offered the opportunity to receive a Sleep Number M9 Bed in exchange for an honest review of what I thought. I was pretty happy because we were on the market for a new mattress (albeit it not the Sleep Number) and because hubby has several back issues we were excited to see if this possibly could help aid in his comfort when sleeping and mine too.
Two weeks ago the Sleep Number truck pulled up to my home and in less then 40 minutes my new bed to be was set up. The technician explained how to work the bed which took less then 5 minutes and then they were on their merry way.
Prior to this I had visited my local Sleep Number store here at Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville, NC and had the awesome Brittney help me to find my Sleep Number. At that time I thought it was a 35 but after several weeks of sleeping on it , I feel pretty comfy at 45. She explained all these things about this bed and to be quite frank I was shocked there was that freaking much to know ,but what could I say that girl knew her stuff and it came in quite useful once I actually received it.
What I Like About The Bed
Comfort: I will admit at my first few nights on it were pretty crappy because I think there is a big difference in getting your sleep number at the store where the bed is already broken in and has a little history to it. After the 4th night I was snug as a bug. My sleep number is a very soft one so at a 45 I was nestled into a little nook that conformed to my body. Hubby’s sleep number is an 80 which was way to hard for me.
I didn’t sweat it in it. I was nervous that the memory foam would get hot and I would have this bed that I hated but it doesn’t. It has some kind temperature balancing sleep surface that absorbs heat which will help you not to sweat. My hubby sweats ALOT in his sleep , so this was a bigggg plus for us.
Less Pain When We Woke Up: The Sleep Number Bed’s sole purpose is to provide comfort and a peaceful night. One of the features is the 5 inches of Lux-Fit foam which cushions all your pressure points. The bed basically conforms to every part of you which it did and my back felt a bit better not much but who knows in time I suppose.
2 remotes: The bed comes with 2 remotes . At first I was like what for but seeing how we lose remotes it serves it’s purpose.
Kids Can’t Jump On It: If you are looking for spring action then this is not the bed for you. It may serve it’s purpose as the kids will have a hard time jumping up in the air on it. I love that feature!
No Sheet: With the brown protective cover sometimes I don’t even put a sheet on my bed. I love that!

What I Don’t Like
Price: One of the reasons I was excited about getting this bed was I thought that I would be able to raise my head and situp in it. Unfortunately that particular component of the bed cost extra. The M9 starts at a little over $3k and I felt like for that price the adjustable option should be included. Then again this is a specialty bed , not just your average mattress.
The Smell: Although the bed does have some micro agent to prevent germs and so forth , the bed has a smell that I also smelled on some memory foam pillows I brought a while back. I have Febrezed the heck out of it and while it is getting better it is still there.
Doing The Do: I was totally embarrassed to answer this question but like 10 people sent me messages on FB asking me. I’ll just say that doing the do takes some getting used to on this bed since there is no spring action LOL!
Feeling Like I’m On A Hill: While it’s great that my hubby and I can adjust the bed to our own personal settings. It can be pretty hard to cuddle when your husbands sleep number is an 80 which means the bed is higher and firmer on his side and my lower sleep number causes me to be lower then him. So if he rolls over he is sliding downward and if I roll over towards him it’s like I am trying to roll up a mountain.
At the end of the day if you have back issues and want a soft or firm mattress at your convenience then this is the bed for you. If you want a memory foam mattress that isn’t hot , then this is the one for you as well. It’s not a horrible bed but it certainly does take some getting used to and if you don’t have a husband to help you stay patient then you might get frustrated easily because it will take a few days to get used to.
My husband and I know quite a few service members with severe back issues which is why I thought it would be great to share this bed with you.

We have a sleep number and I honestly do not remember the model. I have noticed though, that after awhile…a month or two with the different soft or firmness settings we have, there seems to be a small dip in between the air mattress and I fall in lol. Trial and error I suppose. My in-laws have had sleep number mattresses for nearly 10 years and they love them. Although in their B&B they use a memory foam type mattress.

I am totally loyal to tempurpedic. I have friends who have had sleep numbers and love or hate it but we went with tempurpedic and I have never regretted it. Year of abuse on the flight line hurt my husband’s back and tempurpedic helped his back so much and it’s not super pricey either and doesn’t get hot.
I want to get a new mattress but after your review and hearing other people talking about the sleep number I don’t think I would want it. I heard that the middle of the bed is hard cause its like two different mattresses on it, is that true?
We have had a memory foam bed for a while, but is hot, and starting to get indentations. We need a new mattress when we return to the states, since my hubby has had spine surgery. I will start saving my pennies and see if we can afford this by the time we return to the states.
We bought a tempurpedic bed last summer and could never go back to sleeping on a “regular” mattress. It has helped my husband’s back tremendously! Doing “the do” is definitely more of a workout though. :)
You’re not a lone in giving such positive reviews. People often have an adjustment period with the beds but once they get their comfortable number, they often said that they have never been more rested in their lives.
