Quite often I think about all the daily things that happen onbase that we as onpost residents have become so accustomed to , that it becomes the norm.
Yesterday I am laying here in my bed and I could hear the steady barrage of bullets being shot at the range not to far down the road. This isn’t the the first time I have heard this , in fact I think I have become quited used to it which is what made me think today…”how did I become used to this”?
I often wonder what a new wife must think while cleaning and going about her normal routine , she hears semi automatic weapons being fired as if we were in a war zone.
I have wondered how come I am deathly afraid of guns , but when our spouses deploy, the soldiers walk around with guns in front of our children and we think nothing of it.
I think about all the times I am driving and pass a dozen or so humvees in a convoy riding pass with a ½ dozen soldiers for each one, a scene that might frighten the average person but for a military spouse it’s all part of daily life.
What things have become the norm to you?

For me, the norm has become waking up to his text at early hours of the morning, telling me he loves me before he heads to work. Normally I’d be pissed if someone woke me up that early (although my son wakes me up a couple hours later anyway) but I am more than happy to be woken up by his texts.
Hearing the soldiers sing cadence every day, and seeing them do PT. It is motivating. Also the black hawks always flying over head from Wheeler Army Airfield.
Well the normal used to be hearing the soldiers at the range or seeing them do PT. I loved seeing them stand at attention when it was 5′ o clock and hearing the cannon go off. I got so used to these things I never realized when my husband became a recruiter and moved us to SaratogaSprings, NY. & onto a naval base (which is nothing more than some houses ,a mini nex, commi and bank) , that I would truly miss many of the things considered normal. For so long while station in FT.Stewart, Ga and Fort.Leonadrwood, Mo. Seeing convoys, soldiers with guns, kids in basic training and AIT it became the normal way of life. This made me wonder about how “civillans” and how they probably would not understand why the sound of gun fire is soothing to us spouses. Not hearing it when we moved here made it harder to sleep. We have been here 2 1/2 year and I miss everything about a real base. This mini base makes me crazy. I often say to myself how some personel would not get away with the things they do here , if we were on a regular base. I will probably never see another base as my hubby plans to stay recruiter..and within the next 5 years he retires from the army.
I hardly notice my house and windows shaking anymore as the soldiers in the field blow stuff up. I think it’s thunder half the time. lol
What you think about having your house shake like earthquake and loud BOOMs so often that you don’t even care anymore??? I live on post @ Ft Sill and as y’all may know this is the home of field artillery aka you move here and will rarely hear a helo or plane but you will jump so often that becomes the norm. I can even be inside of Walmart n you hear this loud boom like a bomb explosion and people like nothing happens. My mom almost pee her pants when she came to visit and it was 2am and this loud boom shake my house LOL she taught they were attacking the post LOL. Before we pcs here we lived @ Ft Campbell and they are all about helicopters so is very common to hear them come and go 24/7 and then we got here where is very quiet and all the sudden BOOM BOOM BOOM it really sounds like I’m deployed 24/7 oh well so used to it I can even tell the sound of the 50s
hearing sonic booms about 3-4 times a day is what we’re used to! LOL it still makes me jump and sometimes scream but at the same time I have it stuck in my head that its about to come haha… car alarms go off, the curtains shake… yenno the usual “car crashing into the side of my house” sound haha! gotta love it!
Yea have to agree with the artillery shaking our patio windows at Bragg!
I am at Fort Stewart, Georgia. I was walking the dogs one afternoon when some explosions were going off. Heavy training that day. An older couple that must have been visiting their kids, started running. I yelled, its only the training nearby. We are okay. They stopped and looked white as sheets.
But then the day my daughter came home from Iraq for r & r and heard the heavy training the look on her face really hit my heart. She said, “mom what is going on?” I told her, “just heavy training. We hear it a lot right now.”
I have to watch the figurines though. Sometimes they start to wobble when the training gets pretty heavy. LOL.
Bragg here too (now), and it’s artillery for me. I was at Carson and before that I lived off post in Germany, and it’s been about 10 years since I lived near a place where they had regular artillery fire. When I moved back here at the beginning of the month I kept thinking someone was breaking into the garage and finally I remembered we’re near an impact zone.
When we visit family, I always have trouble sleeping because there AREN’T any of these sounds–particularly the jets!
