I’m no Katy Perry fan!

Quite honestly I think I only belt her 2 popular tunes (Firework & I Kissed A Girl)  because they played them so damn much that you were forced to know the words.

Recently Army Wife Angela sent me Katy Perry’s latest video ” A Part of Me” in which through the magic of TV she transforms into a Marine overnight.

The song itself sends a positive message about not losing yourself ,not settling for less , letting a man take away who you are and being strong.

Feminist author Naomi Wolf has criticized Perry on her official Facebook page saying:

“Have you all seen the Katy Perry marines video? It is a total piece of propaganda for the Marines… I really want to find out if she was paid by them for making it… it is truly shameful.

“I would suggest a boycott of this singer who I really liked – if you are as offended at this glorification of violence as I am.”

Of course leave it up to the video police to make this a political issue and say that she is spewing propaganda for the Marines and promoting violence? I mean are you serious? Must everything entertaining (although I wouldn’t consider the music or tv put out these days talented or entertaining) be put under a political microscope?

Have we forgot it’s these troops (that so many forget about) who are the reason why Ms. Wolf can be a writer and make the statement she made above?

If anything I think the video sends a cool message of girl power from within ourselves and in whatever we do, as well as honoring our troops particularly our female service members.

Can I just say I’m hating on how she can go into a dirty gas station bathroom chop off all her hair and still look cute in a grungy pair of jeans in a hoodie?

10 Comments on Is Something Wrong With Singer Katy Perry Being Pro-Military?

  1. But what are your REAL thoughts …? Please do share. I know the message it sends is great, but the performer singing it …? Would love to know how you really feel!!

  2. Hey Michelle! Hmm I mean I don’t follow Katy Perry like that so I don’t know to much about her. I mean I know those 2 main songs she made and frankly I am not a fan. As I stated I am not a fan of any of these SO-CALLED singers and entertainers these days. That being said I am a fan of anytime some positive acknowledgement is given to our troops. I guess whether people view it as positive just depends on their views of the military.

    • Gotcha :) I just don’t think she can sing and she wants to make money off a sensitive topic. I got all riled up about this last week when I saw the video and when you mentioned it my blood started boiling again. Ugh. See, now I can’t shut up :)

  3. I don’t think it’s Marine Propaganda…It is a little weird seeing Katie Perry as a soldier and singing that song thru all the scenes of the video. But overall I think that it a great message for girls.

  4. I thought it was about not letting a man take you down and make you feel like nothing. Honestly I though about my mom how is a solider and how men have tried to steal her sense of self worth and how she got through it. She is not saying join the Marines or anything with this video she is saying I am a strong, independent woman and though you tried to take everything I have you can never take that away from me.

  5. I have to say that I like that video. I don’t think it was Marine propoganda, Katy Perry has always been a supporter of the troops, I remember seeing her in VH1’s Salute the Troops concert, along with many other singers. This is really a female empowerment video though.

  6. I see nothing wrong with it. I think she is a great role model for girls, has a positive attitude, and I would MUCH prefer to hear/see her than quite a few other ‘divas’ out there!

  7. I don’t have an issue with the video at all. I think it’s amazing. I however do have a problem with the song. The part about the ring not meaning anything anyways says to me that marriage is not worth saving or working on/for. That sits wrong with me in a society where if it’s broken we don’t fix it we throw it away. Marriages are worth fighting for and saving… Sad that in today’s society that is acceptable.
