I’m what some might call an Army brat. Hi, I’m Asher and I’m five years old. My dad is a soldier and my mom is a writer. She asked me to do a hotel sleepover with her and check out TownePlace Suites by Marriott. The hotel was a 15-minute drive from base, so that meant our vacation could start right away! Mom called it a “staycation” but I think she was just being silly.

Why I Felt Welcome

Elevator

The lobby had a fireplace, a candy jar, and a nice woman behind the desk who asked about my ninja turtle Michelangelo. While mom checked in, I grabbed some peppermint candy. The woman was nice to mom too and told her that coffee, tea and hot chocolate were available at the breakfast area 24/7 — the coffee part made mom really excited. Once we received our key card, we passed a fitness center and laundry room on the way to the elevator, where I got to push all the buttons.

Why I Loved Our Room

Mom let me open the room door all by myself. I was surprised to see a full kitchen when we first walked in! It had a refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, dishes, pots and pans. Mom said her favorite part was the coffee maker.

She set up her laptop on the free hotel Wi-Fi while I tested out our queen beds — they felt like clouds, and I had my choice of two types of pillows! I then went to the window, and because we were on the top floor, I told mom that I could see Germany from our room. We used to live there, you know. Things we military kids say…my mom giggled at the statement.

The coolest part of our room was a secret passage! Mom said it was actually a giant closet, but it was special because it connected the bathroom and the kitchen, with doors on both sides. It was perfect for playing hide and seek!

Why I Felt Special

OIn A Pinchur hotel had a pool, but a rainstorm hit, so I’ll have fun with that next time. The TV had great options for me and I watched a PBS Kids show while mom ordered pizza to our room.

After dinner, mom announced that she had a surprise. We headed downstairs to a room filled with treats! She said it was called the In a Pinch® Market. Mom let me pick any one thing I wanted, so I chose a bag of Skittles.

Back in our room, we ordered the movie “Zootopia” and watched it while curled up on our big bed. It was the perfect night.

Why I Loved Breakfast

The next morning I couldn’t wait to see what came with our free breakfast. Mom was excited about her eggs, fruit, yogurt and coffee, but I think my kid breakfast was better. I chose Froot Loops, a muffin, and my first glass of cranberry juice. What can I say? Travel makes me try new things.

Why Other Military Kids Should Try It

When it was time to leave, I didn’t want to go. Mom asked what I liked about TownePlace Suites by Marriott and here is what I said:

  • It was close to home. Mom said they have several locations near military bases.
  • Everyone was nice to me. Mom said they provided excellent customer service.
  • The food was delicious. Mom loved the hot breakfast, availability of snacks and the option to cook during a longer stay.
  • All the great kid TV! Mom liked the variety of kid-friendly entertainment.
  • The pool for another day! Mom said not to worry, all TownePlace Suites have pools.
  • Someone brought a dog! Mom said that TownePlace Suites is a pet-friendly hotel.
  • I want to stay longer next time. Mom said that the hotel is perfect for extended stays.
  • I saw children helping their parents with laundry, and I bet they were also military kids. Mom said that I was probably right because TownePlace Suites offers special military prices.
