I remember the day I watched my husband leave for our longest deployment ever. It was 2007 and the day started our normal but in the pit of my stomach I felt that knot. That knot was that there from the overwhelming feeling that while we woke up like normal and did our daily routine, we were coming home later without my husband and my kids father for 15 long months.
As we approached the airfield the painstaking feeling of watching soldiers place brave faces on while hiding behind sunglasses reminded me deeply of the sacrifice they make as they leave us here in the comforts of home to serve overseas in less then desirable conditions (at times). They leave behind children and miss special days that no video or picture can replace.
Although no picture can replace the memories of a special family moment you missed, pictures certainly help remember those you love while they are away . For me it was how I got through so many night of missing my soldier. It was also how I get my husband’s presence etched in my kids memories because they were young and I wanted them to know daddy was still here just on the other side of the moon.

Wahl and Military Spouse Magazine recently hosted a photo contest to recognize men and women everywhere who run a household while their spouse is serving our country. Military spouses were asked to capture a special moment with their partner or family and submit their photos. Wahl and Military Spouse Magazine then awarded one military family with $1,000.
While there could only be one winner, Wahl is honoring all the families who shared their heartfelt photos, and the many more who serve our country, with a special Veteran’s Day video that brings these amazing images to life.
