Let me start by saying my neighborhood  is small.  There are 6 streets all in a pretty row and each street has approximately 16 houses.  So that would be under 100 homes.  Why the little math lesson?  I just want to put the story I am about to tell you into perspective.

I was walking home from a workout class with my new neighbor and she asked me if I knew another lady in our neighborhood.  We will call her “Jane” for this story.  I said that I knew “Jane” casually, but not well.  My neighbor then proceeds to tell me that her husband dated “Jane” in high school!  Twenty years ago in a small town in an undisclosed state, they dated and now they both are in Hawaii and living in a small neighborhood of 100 home and are 2 streets away.   Really?  What are the chances of that?  I am guessing they are up there with the odds of winning a couple million in the lottery!

I have heard of this happening only once before in my 12 years as an Army Spouse.  Our first duty station was Ft. Benning and one of my neighbors had dated another neighbor’s husband.  Sad thing was that it had been about 6 years before and both were happily married, but EVERYONE acted like the girl had the plague.  She might as well have walked around with a big “A” on her chest.  Most woman love good gossip as we all know and everyone made up their mind that she was a bad person just because she happened to end up living down the street from an old boyfriend.

When you get down to it the Army is a SMALL place and I would think the odds of this happening are a million to one.  I am really bad at math, so don’t quote me on that or judge me on my horrible math grades and/or boyfriends from high school.  I get enough judging on my behavior from week to week, I don’t need anymore help in that department!

  1. My next door neighbor use to live 3 doors down, moved to Hawaii came back and now she is my next door neighbor. The God parents of my children I have known since I was dating my husband, we went to Germany, they followed. We went back to the states, they came to NC and we followed. Being military is a small world. While being back in NC I found friends I grew up with in middle school. While I was in Germany I happened to run into a friend I went to middle school with.

  2. In NY, I discovered that my oldest son’s best friend’s mother (whom I also became very good friends with) grew up (went to junior high, high school and a few years of college in IL) and was very close with one of my DH’s best friends whom he met while stationed in TX. She saw his name as a friend on my FB page and was completely gobsmacked that I knew him. The Army is an amazingly small world.

  3. We see people again and again! We went to Oktoberfest in Munich with over 100,000 people in attendance and bumped into someone we knew and hadn’t seen in a long time… in a beertent (and it wasn’t the famous Hofbrau one where Americans go). I can’t even imagine what the odds of that might have been! It is a very small world!
