An enthusiastic greeting, an encouraging nuzzle, or quiet companionship — there are numerous reasons why dogs are known as “man’s best friend.” Science tells us that animals increase happiness and reduce stress, but if you’re an animal lover you already know this. Perhaps it’s through everyday moments like playing fetch, taking a walk together, or by slowing down to snuggle and quietly stroke your four-legged friend’s fur.

For some of us, an animal is life-changing, and is our first step on the road to healing. Meet wounded warrior Dan Lasko, who while adjusting to life as an amputee, found confidence, security, companionship and emotional stability all thanks to a dog named Wally.

Watch as Dan shares their touching story of how Wally taught him that “Everything was going to be alright.” As a disclaimer, you may want to have some tissues handy before clicking play.

 The Healing Power of Animals

Dan’s trauma is unfortunately something that several of our service members experience. With PTSD awareness coming to the forefront, more of our warriors receive the therapy they need, and some are lucky enough to heal with an animal by their side. Dan realized the value that Wally added to his life and he has since paid Wally’s lesson forward to many other disabled vets and young amputees.

“By My Side: Dan’s Story,” is the first film in Pedigree’s Learn From Dog series of inspirational and touching short films featuring dog owners who learned great lessons from dogs during physically and emotionally challenging times. These films are part of a new global campaign called “FEED THE GOOD” that is Inspired by the belief that dogs make us better people.

It’s during the challenging moments that we can learn the most from dogs, and can appreciate the value of the lessons taught. Pedigree believes that the lovable innocence found in every dog helps us reconnect with our true selves. “By My Side: Dan’s Story”  is an exceptional example of that love, strength and endurance.
