Once they leave for bootcamp, there a a few things you will need and want to do to ensure that you can begin using your military benefits.

Your Military ID

You will need your military ID for everything in military life. From getting on base to go going to the doctor, your military ID will become just as important as your drivers license. In fact outside of using it to drive, your ID can be used as an ID for almost everything.

To Get Your Military ID:

Within a short time of your loved one’s arrival at at bootcamp, you should receive a packet with information about your ID card and DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) in the mail.

You will need to make an appointment at the ID card office at a base near you. You can locate the closest one here. If you have trouble reaching the ID card office or finding one you can call the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) at 1-800-538-9552.

Within that packet you received there will be a form known as DD Form 1172-2. This is the form that you will need to complete and take to the RAPIDS aka ID card facility.

Things You Will Need To Bring With You:

  • Marriage Certificate
  • Two Forms of Acceptable ID— This can include a state or government issued picture ID, and a second identity source such as a birth certificate or a social security card. You can view acceptable forms of ID here.

Military ID’s for Kids

Children 10 and over usually qualify for a military ID, but be sure to verify this information as changes have often taken place due to COVID. Currently it appears the military child must be 14 and over to get one.
