The planning stages of our Disney trip has begun. Now that I have a better understanding of the how the Disney Military Salute Tickets work thanks to Steve Bell’s of Military Disney Tips guest post a few weeks ago , my only focus at the moment has been what Disney resort to stay in . Shades of Green was in the top running but the truth of the matter is my opinion has changed as far as value goes. We stayed at SOG back in 2008 and had a ball. You can read the recap of my stay there here. Frankly though SOG is nice ,but has gotten more costly and while their is no tax I now feel like I was missing something while staying there. It could have been the fact that the resort is big but there was not much else to do for the kids besides the pool and the arcade. The look of the resort is a golf green and relaxing to an adult but to a kid , it leaves alot to be desired. It could just be the lack of “Disney Feeling”.
Just for the record the recap I mention above was written in 2009 so yes my opinion has changed.
This August thanks to the Disney Military Discount we have chosen to stay at a Disney Value Resort for only $59.99 a night. You see many people know about the discounted Disney tickets for military but alot are glossing over the huge savings Disney is offering at select resorts.
There are four Disney value resorts and a fifth one is currently in the building stages. Originally we decided on the Disney Pop Century Resort because currently they are the only value resort with suites. Unfortunately they were all booked up so now we are in the process of choosing from the remaining three. Due to the fact that we are die hard “Toy Story” fans I think the All Star Movie Resort is in our future. The Value resorts offer a better selection of kids activities, a more kid friendly themed environment, character shaped pools, arcades and kid friendly food courts.

I have to say, Shades of Green is our new favorite Disney Resort. We got to Disney World one day earlier than our reservation, so we stayed one night at All Star resort. The rooms were soooooo small, the beds were tiny. For four of us, we really had to be okay with the small space. The rooms at Shades of Green are HUGE! We met a lot of great military families that we had fun with. There are two pools my kids enjoyed, and the food was wonderful, and much cheaper than at the Disney Resort hotels.
I have been trying to plan a try to Disney World for September and have no idea how to get the descount for the resorts. How did you do that? Every time I call, they send me to Shades of Green which is 100 a night!
We did SOG about 4 years ago, and have stayed at Pop Century ever since. The kids love it! I just didn’t get the Disney feeling when we were at SOG. SOG may be a good value for some, but b/c of my husband’s rank we were paying over double of what we pay at Pop Century. Of all the value Disney hotels, Pop Century is by far the best. I have a family member who works for Disney in their resort industry, and Pop Century is always his recommendation. Hope you have a wonderful trip! It is, by far, the best place on earth:) It may also be worth checking out their log cabins. My folks stayed there and thought they were great. They aren’t overly expensive, and they are like a suite since they have their own kitchen area. I think they sleep up to 6, but you’d have to check that out on their website.
My Mom and Daughter stayed at the All Star Movie Resort and they LOVED it
@Mandi I agree I felt the same way. SOG was just missing something. I think the Disney resorts at least the value ones tend to just be more colorful and so much more.
@Kelda I do agree the rooms were extremely huge but I still just felt alittle out of the loop there and blah. Super huge bathrooms though!
