October has arrived and with it the spookiest season of all — Halloween! Are you looking to scare up some Halloween fun without spending a scary amount of money? If so, check out these money savvy tips to get your military family in the ghoulish spirit.


Play dress up. Costumes are fun for children and adults alike. Connect with your friends and arrange a costume swap, borrow accessories to complete your homemade costume, or trade talents such as hair styling and face-painting. Don’t forget to check out your military community’s online garage sale site or reuse center for free and cheap deals.

Boo your neighbors. This is a great way to share the “spirit” of the season and connect with your community. Spread some love by ringing a doorbell, dropping off a bag of Halloween treats, and then make a dash. Your neighbor will enjoy some goodies, fun and mystery in an easy and surprising way. Get crafty. Halloween decorations don’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Create an eerie mood by purchasing colored or black light bulbs. Simple construction paper crafts can take you a long way through paper chains in black in orange. or cutouts of black cats, white ghosts, pumpkins or bats. One of our favorite ideas included dropping a glow stick into a white balloon and drawing ghostly expressions on each balloon with a permanent marker. Don’t forget the value of pumpkin carving or making Halloween luminaries to line your door.

Find free on-base activities. Look to your local USO, military unit, and other on-base organizations for free activities that may include costume contests, haunted houses, or Trunk or Treat events. You may even be able to dress up for a zombie run, or wear costumes to your Zumba class. Trust me, that last one is a blast.

Scare up some treats. Halloween isn’t just about candy. Check out these easy and delicious recipes from Operation in Touch. They’re perfect for family time, fun with girlfriends, or a Halloween social. Host a Teeny Halloweeny playdate. Scaring up a few friends! Have a costume contest, bob for apples, carve jack-o-lanterns and don’t forget eerie music to accompany your party. Ask friends and neighbors to help chip in with the cost and/or bring their favorite munchies and beverages. Voila! You have a Halloween with no tricks and all treats.
