Between 2010 and 2012, our family had the chance to relocate to the beautiful country of Belgium, with its amazing people, outstanding beer and gorgeous architecture.

The military placed us in an off post housing community, in the small medieval village of Ghlin. The community is located just across the street from an old cemetery, with graves dating from at least 1848. It was pretty cool and I absolutely loved it, especially since I’m very interested in funeral art, the after death and the paranormal.

The community itself is a cul-de-sac with twenty townhomes, and our house was the number 13, just on the loop. From the beginning, my family and I had some strange feelings about the house, starting with the fact that it was so different of what American homes are like. This included the way the rooms are distributed and how it looked like a 19th century building, although the records say the community was built in the 1990’s.

While there, we experienced some strange and funny happenings, but nothing really frightening. I would find doors that I made sure to shut after cleaning the rooms upstairs, wide open minutes later. There was an awful sewage smell that would show up randomly, and nobody could find the source—even though we called maintenance people several times to check it out.

My favorite was our night visitor, who came to our bedroom every single night during those two years. He/she never showed me a face, voice or sound, but announced his/her presence by shaking our bed, really fiercely and quickly, like in a prank or something every single night. Eventually, we got used to it and I would just smile and go back to sleep.

Looking back, it was fun and I wish I could have produced a photo or video, or at least some sort of a keepsake. The bed we used back then got replaced three years ago. If you’re occupying my former home now, please say hello to my favorite ghost for me :)
