The day I became a wife was the proudest moment of my entire life. My husband, an active duty soldier, looked so handsome in his dress blues. My wedding was something you would find in a Nicholas Sparks movie. However, military life is not as glamorous as the books and movies make it out to be. It is raw, it is lonely, it holds some of the happiest moments of your life, but it also holds some of the hardest. I have learned that being a military wife pushes your limits in all aspects of your life. Here is what Nicholas Sparks failed to prepare me for when I married a soldier. You will have to be the strongest, you’ve ever been and then some. This lifestyle carries heavy baggage.
You Come Second
Despite being the spouse of your SO you will always come second to the military. The sooner you come to terms with that fact the easier this life will be. Making plans can get tricky and even when everything looks like it’s in the clear, well, that changes. You learn to accept to roll with it and always have a plan B! The military is going to push you and you must learn to push back. You will have to face year long deployments, but despite crying out of loneliness you will paste that smile on your face because your SO needs you to be strong in the moments they cannot be.
It Can Feel Like Highschool
Deciding to live on post has been both the best and worst decision of my life. For every dozen women you meet, only about two will be completely normal. I haven’t quite decided if this is because a lot of us don’t work so some get bored and like to stir up drama or if it’s because a lot of us are married and younger than most. Either way, you will deal with some of the most absurd situations you have ever been in. Who knows, you might even learn a couple things about yourself you weren’t aware of! Try to make light of these situations and not get involved. You know yourself better than anyone else and you will be extremely thankful for the two good friends you do have.
It Is Going to Be the Time of Your Life
The best part about being a military wife is that you get to endure all of life’s trials and triumphs with your best friend and love of your life. You will go through obstacles not many marriages must face, but you can do so with grace, knowing that you will come out stronger as a couple. You will meet some of the greatest people that will become less like friends and more life family. You will have opportunities to see new places and try new things. It is such a thrill! Enjoy it.*
