I personally have always down played my role as a military spouse. I mean I haven’t went to war, I have never had to leave my family for extended periods of time, or deal with the mental and physical stress that the military can sometimes place on our soldiers.

However , I have learned that although military spouses never serve in combat we serve in a different capacity. We serve on the home front by taking care of the family, household duties and keeping things together to protect the morale of our soldiers.

Just like our military personnel service members don’t necessarily expect thanks neither do our military spouses but a show of appreciation is always welcome. Below are 5 easy ways to say Thank You in honor of “Military Spouse Appreciation Day”.

Lend a Listening Ear

Many military spouses put on the emotional strong armor. Some of us hold things in order to make it seem like we got it all under control. The truth is sometimes we need someone to talk to and lending a simple listening ear is one of the best gifts and thank you’s you can give.

 A Day To Herself

Being a mother or father doesn’t make anyone more special than the other , but being a mom (which has challenges of it’s own) and dealing with the stress of a deployment can be tough. A great way of saying Thank You is offering a mil spouse a few hours of babysitting time . Everyone needs some alone time just to breathe or get a cup of coffee.

A Special Gift

Who doesn’t like gifts? Say thank you by creating a small gift basket full of a mil spouse’s favorite goodies or a bottle of her favorite wine and some spa essentials.

Send Something Handwritten

In an age of fast moving technology we sometimes get caught up in quick ways of communicating like Facebook messages and email. Try sending a nice card or a special letter written on some fun stationary. There is nothing like snail mail and something you can actually have as a keepsake.

Say Thank You

At the end of the day a simple Thank You is worth a thousand words. It is nice to just hear it sometimes.

  1. Thanks for all the great neighbours I ever had a Carson Knox and Polk. Those mom’s and husband’s who step in and help carpoolinformation kids to school babysitting etc. People like that make it a lol easier being a military spouse!!!

  2. Just be there when she needs to talk. I have been a military wife for 12 years and it is nice to have someone talk to when my husband is always away.

  3. By babysitting if she has young children! I’m always so thankful for people who are willing to give me a little time to myself. :)

  4. The best thing people did for me was not bombard me with new stories and just hung out with me like normal! Normalcy is amazing when there’s so many people grilling you about how you’re feeling or dealing with everything all the time. I know it’s out of genuine concern but being reminded daily that your spouse is away isn’t something I need reminding of!

  5. You can thank a military spouse with a car package, something to make the person know that you care about her and are thinking about her and are there as a friend.

  6. By telling her how amazing she is and doing things to encourage her even if she doesn’t look like she’s struggling. It’s always overwhelming and we can always use a kind word:)

  7. I love all of these ideas. I grew up a military child and now I’m a military wife. I loved my childhood and I love my life now.

  8. Army brat turned Army wife coming from a long line of Army men in both my family and my husbands :)

  9. I’ve been a military spouse for 5yrs now and it makes me feel good when I hear from perfect strangers the words Thank You for all that you do and for the support of our troops. It makes me feel like I’m important and a part of something great!!!

  10. I thank military spouses by providing free homecoming photoshoots when their husbands come back from deployments. On my husbands last deployment, I was thankful for all the little things other spouses did for me, whether it was just inviting me over for coffee, making plans to go out for lunch, or making sure I wasn’t alone on Valentine’s Day, all the little gestures everyone did to make sure I wasn’t alone were much appreciated.

  11. I’d thank a military spouse by simply being a good friend and offering child care when needed. My husbands deployed and these simple acts of kindness go a long way.

  12. I am proud to be an army spouse. It may not always be easy being both parents for long periods of time or moving from place to place, but being an army wife is a special life. I get to see beautiful places and meet friends that become family and I get to love a man that is willing to give his life for this country that we all love!

  13. Thanks !!! I love be a Army wife and support my husband and USA. Is not easy but God bring me all the strong that I need.

  14. I love being a military spouse I have gotten to see places I only dreamed about as a kid.

  15. Understand that many times we are alone and offering help with the kids is a big deal! Being friendly goes a long way as well, it’s hard moving around and not being able to make solid connections, a friendly smile goes a long way.

  16. Sincerely, and with a genuine smile, say “Thank you”. When you thank a military spouse, you are recognizing the efforts and sacrifice of that Service Member’s sweetheart. I have found that most Service Members APPRECIATE that kind of “thank you” more than being thanked herself/himself. Paper cards and handmade gifts are especially nice tangible ways to express “thanks”, too.

  17. The population forgets the sacrifice of the military spouse and tends to presume “you knew what you were getting into”, so therefore you are no different then anyone else. In fact the military spouse is the backbone for the military keeping the home front safe. As a retired soldier and serving as a spouse of an active duty soldier a simple “thank you for YOUR service” goes along way.

  18. Making sure that the benefits and compensation are good for the family. This country definitely needs to do more for our military families.

  19. Thank you is the best word ! it really gives a lot of strength !! thank you for the chance !

  20. Care packages are a great way to say that you love them and are thinking of them and people love to get surprises in the mail.

  21. I would definitely go with care packages with toiletries or for the spouse at home gift cards for grocery items or for big stores like walmart for other items

  22. i dont know about everyone else, but we walk up to military people and shake their hand and say “thanks for your service”

  23. Sending a care package or just saying thank you are great ways of showing your appreciation.

  24. By sending a fun gift basket with lots of goodies and snacks and including a gift card to a nice restaurant and movie.

  25. You can thank a military spouse by being there as a friend whether it be in person or over the phone. Having a great friend and support is important.

  26. I would show love and support by telling them how much I appreciate them. Don’t assume that someone knows how much you care about them and love them, TELL them, they will really value your words.

  27. We can thank a military spouse by doing little things to show that you care and are there like watching the kids, preparing a meal or two or sending a letter of love.

  28. Girls night out for the mom and have one or two babysitters watch all the kids. Schedule a play group date with her kids. Freezer meals are great just make a little more.

  29. I really love the ideas ! and love to say thank you , sending something or a special gift is so important !!
